Dear Rhode Island Community,

This spring, the Davies Social Justice Club began working on an initiative to support the passage of legislation at the Rhode Island House and Senate that would provide school meals universally, meaning that all students across the state would have access to breakfast and lunch free of charge. 

Members of our club and community have first-hand knowledge of the effects of food insecurity on learning, growth, and development. As the citizens of Rhode Island grapple with rising costs, basic needs are going unmet. Students at all grade levels in our K-12 systems face the choice of food or debt; this contributes to dropping grades, dropping test scores, and dropping self-worth amongst students from across the state.

The Rhode Island Senate passed this bill on May 16th, and now we have the opportunity to tell our representatives in the Rhode Island House that we support the passage of this much-needed legislation.

Estimada comunidad de Rhode Island,

Esta primavera, el Club de Justicia Social de Davies comenzó a trabajar en una iniciativa para apoyar la aprobación de una legislación en la Casa de Representantes de Rhode Island y el Senado que proporcionaría comidas escolares universalmente, lo que significa que todos los estudiantes de todo el estado tendrían acceso a desayuno y almuerzo de forma gratuita.

Los miembros de nuestro club y comunidad conocen de primera mano los efectos de la inseguridad alimentaria en el aprendizaje, el crecimiento y el desarrollo. A medida que los ciudadanos de Rhode Island se enfrentan al aumento de los costos, las necesidades básicas no se satisfacen. Los estudiantes de todos los niveles de grado en nuestros sistemas K-12 enfrentan la elección de alimentos o deudas; esto contribuye a bajar las calificaciones, bajar los puntajes de las pruebas y bajar la autoestima entre los estudiantes de todo el estado.

El Senado de Rhode Island aprobó este proyecto de ley el 16 de mayo y ahora tenemos la oportunidad de decirles a nuestros representantes en la Cámara de Representantes de Rhode Island que apoyamos la aprobación de esta legislación tan necesaria.
