This week, our seniors had the incredible opportunity to attend a special event in the school library featuring Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore. Since starting his position, Secretary Amore has visited over 100 schools across the state to talk with students about the power of voting and why it’s so important to participate in our democracy.
Through an engaging presentation, he walked students through the history of voting in America, including eye-opening facts about voter suppression methods such as literacy tests, grandfather clauses, and racial intimidation. He discussed how voting rights have evolved—from the early days when only white male landowners could vote, to the victories of the women’s suffrage movement, to the lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18.
Throughout the session, Secretary Amore asked thoughtful questions and encouraged students to reflect on how they can be active participants in shaping the future. He also took time to answer questions from students at the end of the presentation.
We’re grateful to Secretary Amore for taking the time to connect with our future voters and empower them with knowledge and inspiration!
