- DAVIES TECH
- Head coach: Josh Petersen
- 2022-23 regular-season record: 3-15 (Division III-B)
- 2023 postseason results: Did not qualify.
- Returning players: Daniel Rose (senior guard), Elton Gomes (senior guard), Javon Jesus (senior guard), David Salako (senior guard), Edrickson Coelho Ramos (senior guard), Nathan Borden (junior guard).
- Notable newcomers: Sergio Salguero (senior forward), Jamaal Andrade (junior forward), Ziahair Gibau (junior guard), Daniel Delgado (junior forward), Badara Bajinan (junior forward), Albert Medrano (sophomore guard), Jomar Lopes (sophomore forward).
- Outlook: The new staff, lead by head coach Josh Peterson, has inherited a hungry group of athletes eager to grow and compete. Per Peterson, the Patriot program is working hard on building a foundation of accountability, sacrifice, and teamwork. Nathan Borden and Daniel Rose return as previous varsity pieces. Rose hopes to make a name for himself on the hardwood like he has on the gridiron over the past few seasons. “Regardless of who played varsity last season, everyone came in with a clean slate and an opportunity to flourish in the new system. The team’s buy-in and support of one another this early in the season has been a shining light just a few weeks in,” said Peterson. Borden is a natural leader on the court, but captain designation has not been determined at this stage. The team’s athleticism, speed, and ability to defend will be the program’s backbone this season. With a team-first mindset, the program’s coaches set out to hold one another accountable, while making each player better than they were the day before. Head coach’s take: “We-Not-Me is the mindset preached daily. The team has bought in on this philosophy from Day 1, understanding each other’s why. Our coaching staff, consisting of Coach Cousineau, Coach Simeone, and I have been impressed with the dedication, coachability, and sacrifice of a group of student-athletes who have only been together for a short period of time. The program looks to grow every day. We emphasize to the team daily that when you add up all the days of growth they will equal to our goal. Our speed and defensive mindset will carry us in our inaugural season with the Patriots.”

- Marigny, a student in the top 1% of her class at William M. Davies, Jr. Technical High School, has a strong interest in bioengineering and agriculture and loves a challenge that will help her gain more industry knowledge about her desired field. Currently a pharmacy technician at Green Line Apothecary, Marigny handles pharmaceutical software and robotic machinery and prepares prescriptions. Her experience also extends to civic engagement as a former student representative with the XQ+RI partnership to reimagine high school, an intern at the Urban Perinatal Education Center in Pawtucket, and an intern at Mount Hope Community Garden in Providence. Marigny also has a record of demonstrating effective interpersonal skills, never passing up an opportunity to help her fellow classmates and peers.
- “I am honored to have had the opportunity to both meet and teach Taina during her time here at Davies Tech,” said science teacher Louis Cirello. “Her qualifications for this program are unmatched. She is a motivated and passionate student of STEAM, and I have no doubt she will go far after graduation. She will be a great addition to this year’s National Youth Science Camp delegation.”

- Fall 2022 All-Scholastics story, Part II
- Posted on 12/8/22 by The Valley Breeze
- PDF Version
- "A Winter All-Scholastics selection last year as a member of his school’s basketball team, Giwa “has quietly turned himself into a solid football player in just two short years,” said Davies head coach Henry Cabral.
- Giwa is a two-time All-Division and All-Academic selection who helped the Patriots return to the Division IV semifinals and post a 7-3 mark that was their best record in their four-year existence. He played multiple positions, especially at defensive end, as Giwa recorded 52 tackles, 14 sacks, and three fumble recoveries, and as a hybrid running back, as he ran for 378 yards and three touchdowns.
- In the classroom, Giwa, who is a Pawtucket resident and studying Automotive Careers, is ranked in the top 15 percent of his class. His GPA is 3.79, and this past quarter, he sported a GPA of 3.89.
- A First-Team All-Division selection, Cano had an outstanding season in helping the Patriots, which went winless in their inaugural season in 2019 and totaled just five wins over the next two seasons, notch their first winning record.
- Thanks to a four-match win streak midway through the season, Davies went 8-6 in Division IV action, and in the playoffs, Cano helped the Patriots reach the semifinals by netting a 3-0 victory over Shea in the quarters.
- Cano, who is a Pawtucket resident, did a little of everything for the Patriots this year, as she contributed 48 kills and 53 service aces. And off the court, she was just as exceptional: Cano boasts a 3.62 GPA and is studying Bio-Manufacturing."

- 2022 TIMES BASEBALL PREVIEW: A welcomed return to normalcy as area teams return experience, bring un
- DAVIES TECH
- Head coach: Justin Medeiros
- 2021 league record: 8-5 (Division III-B)
- 2021 postseason results: Defeated Blackstone Valley Prep in D-III quarterfinals (10-7); lost to Hope in best-of-three D-III semifinals (two games to one).
- Returning players: Jase Deanseris, senior P/2B/SS; David Laquale, senior P/C/SS; Robby Spardello, senior 2B/3B; Noah Campanelli, junior P/C/SS; Antonio Cabral, junior OF; Daniel Rose, sophomore 2B/OF; Aiden Cote, sophomore 1B/OF; Anthony Varela, sophomore OF; Pedro Ponceano, sophomore 1B.
- Notable newcomers: Myles Robinson, freshman 3B; Luke Ducharme, freshman P/2B; Daniel Delgado, freshman 1B; Brady Scarpetti, freshman 2B/OF; Ziahair Gibau, freshman OF; Edward Guzman, freshman OF.
- Outlook: The sting suffered from dropping the deciding game of last year’s Division III semifinals to eventual champion Hope is fueling this year’s group of Patriots. Medeiros welcomes back nine returning starters – three of them named All-Division. … Deanseris, Laquale and Spardello were appointed captains. All three have been starters throughout their high school careers. … There’s a level of intrigue surrounding Campanelli after a strong showing a year ago. He’s one of the headliners of the pitching staff that will also be counting on Deanseris and Laquale. … From the leadoff hitter to the No. 9 batter, the Patriots have no shortage of options when it comes to putting the ball in play. Medeiros lauded his group for their collective speed and feels Davies has enough options to play the long game when warranted.
- Head coach’s take: “Having come so close to making the championship last year, and having many of our dedicated athletes returning to the team, I feel victory is within our grasp this season. We will use that heartbreaking defeat as motivation and come back stronger than ever.”

- 51 RI Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists
- RHODE ISLAND — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation selected 16,000 students from across the country as semifinalists in the 2021 program, including 51 from Rhode Island.
- At the beginning of each school year, the NMSC reveals the students who will go on to compete for scholarships in the spring. About 7,500 of the original 16,000 semifinalists win scholarships.
- The semifinalist round is determined by the results of the pre-SAT tests taken by about 1.5 million high school juniors nationwide during the previous school year. The list of semifinalists will be winnowed down to about 15,000 by early 2022, and those students will submit applications to get scholarships.
- The scholarships awarded in the spring range in value, with the highest at $2,500.
