Supporting Our Caregiving Students: Davies in the Spotlight

Posted Date: 10/27/26 (03:00 PM)

At Davies, we know that preparing students for success means recognizing the responsibilities they carry both in school and at home.

On Monday, October 26, 2026, the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) hosted the Let’s Get Ready Community of Practice: Understanding and Supporting Rhode Island’s Caregiving Youth at RISD. We are proud that our Principal, Dr. Jose Libano, served as a panelist in the fireside chat, sharing strategies on how schools can better understand and uplift student caregivers.

With roughly 1 in 3 Rhode Island middle and high school students identifying as caregiving youth, Davies is taking direct action. Through RIDE’s research-practice partnership, we are actively conducting student surveys to learn more about our students’ unique caregiving and work commitments so we can build intentional, flexible systems of support across our community.

The state-level guidebook serves as a roadmap for educators and school leaders across Rhode Island to identify caregiving students, understand their specific challenges, and implement actionable flexibilities and systematic academic and emotional supports in their schools.
